In our Common Rule of the Sacramental Community of the Coworkers of Christ, we enshrined the spirit of Pentecost in the very first chapter of the Rule: Chapter 1 Love One Another.
Common Rule Chapter One: Love One Another
Pentecost was never merely about ecstatic speech or tongues of fire dancing above the heads of the Apostles. At its heart, Pentecost is about the Holy Spirit breaking down walls between people and forming a new kind of human community rooted in divine love.
Different languages… one Spirit. Different peoples… one Body. Different stories… one table. That is the vision we strive toward as Coworkers of Christ.
Our Rule begins not with power, authority, or rigid doctrine, but with love because Christianity without love quickly becomes little more than noise dressed in religious language.
The Spirit of Pentecost calls us beyond fear, tribalism, and division into the difficult and holy work of seeing Christ in one another.
To “love one another” is not sentimental. It is revolutionary. It means choosing mercy over outrage. Listening before condemning. Building bridges where the world profits from walls. Recognizing the image of God in people who do not look, think, vote, worship, or live exactly as we do.
As Christ Catholics and Coworkers of Christ, we believe the Church is healthiest when the windows are open wide enough for the Spirit to move freely again.
Pentecost reminds us that the Gospel was never meant for one nation, one tribe, one denomination, or one ideological camp. It was poured out upon all flesh.
May we never become so certain of ourselves that we can no longer hear the rushing wind of the Holy Spirit calling us outward into love, mercy, justice, reconciliation, and deeper communion with God and one another.
Come, Holy Spirit. Kindle in us again the fire of divine love.
